Practical support for patients

Living with a palliative condition can involve many challenges, from managing symptoms and navigating the care system, to being able to access the right support and benefits

Expert support and guidance for your wellbeing

Our Therapeutic and Wellbeing teams have a wealth of knowledge and skills to support and signpost you to help overcome these challenges.

Symptom management

We’re committed to helping you with practical support to find relief from symptoms such as fatigue, pain and breathlessness. Our professional teams work together across all our services to ensure you are living well and can continue to do the things that make you happy. Our Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy teams can provide advice and support through our Living Well programme. Our Complementary Therapy team can also help provide relief from pain through a range of therapies.

Finances and carer support

Navigating healthcare and accessing benefits can be confusing and frustrating. Our Social Care team can assist with signposting you to services that can help, and advocating for you when you need extra support. You may be finding the day-to-day things more difficult and considering having some support at home. The team can also help with organising care packages and respite, and can signpost to other services that may be able to help.

Equipment and adaptations

Sometimes you may need a little extra help to be independent – this could involve arranging adaptations and/or equipment in your home. The Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy teams are able to provide some equipment if you are staying in our In-Patient Unit or coming to our Wellbeing Centre. For other equipment, we may need to refer you to the local authority’s community therapy teams, who can assess you at home.

Planning for the future

Our Social Care team can give you the support and information you need to plan for the future, including creating a lasting power of attorney, writing your will, planning your funeral and advance care planning. They are also available to support patients staying in our In-Patient Unit with planning for being discharged and future care.  If you’d like more information about how we might be able to help you, please contact our Therapeutic & Wellbeing team by calling 01908 973264 or emailing T&Wservices@willen-hospice.org.uk

Frequently asked questions

Our Living Well programme and drop-in sessions are available to anyone with a palliative condition. However, some of our services are limited to patients who are staying in our In-Patient Unit or being looked after by our Willen at Home team.

Our dropin sessions are open to anyone with a palliative diagnosis, so no referral is needed. However, to access our Living Well programme, we require a referral from a healthcare professional, such as your GP, district nurse or specialist team. They will complete a referral form on your behalf.

Some of our support can be provided over the phone, or virtually in the case of our group sessions. If you would like to access our services but would have difficulty in coming to the Hospice, for whatever reason, please contact us on 01908 973264 or T&Wservices@willen-hospice.org.uk and we will do what we can to help you.
