Practical support after a bereavement

What will happen when my loved one dies?

What happens when my loved one dies?

If your loved one dies at the Hospice, we will make sure they are treated with dignity and respect at all times. We will do our best to meet their wishes for their death when the time comes. If you can’t be there in person for their final moments, it may be possible for us to arrange video or telephone contact between you.

Frequently asked questions

Below you’ll find information you’ll need following the death of your loved one.

The funeral director of your choice will come to your loved one’s Hospice room, or their house if they’re at home, and safely remove their body.

If your loved one dies in the Hospice and you would like us to place something with them in the coffin, please let us know and we will do so. If they do not have the item with them, you can arrange this with the funeral directors at a later date. This includes any clothing that you may wish for them to wear. If your loved one died elsewhere, please speak to your funeral director to arrange this.

When someone dies, a doctor is required to complete a Medical Certificate Cause of Death (MCCD). If the person died in the Hospice, one of our doctors will do this. If the person died at home, or in a care home or nursing home, a doctor who has seen the deceased in their lifetime will do so. This certificate is then scanned and emailed to the Registrar’s Office at Milton Keynes Council. A death must be registered within five days of the MCCD being issued.

Once the MCCD has been checked, if your email address has been entered, you will receive an automated email with a link to book an appointment to register the death. If the doctor did not provide your email address, a booking can still be made by calling 01908 372101. The contact centre will check that they have the documents required and book the registration appointment for you.

When your appointment is booked, you will be sent a confirmation email with a document containing all the questions the registrar will ask you at the appointment.

A registration must be completed in person. However, if you are unable to get to Milton Keynes, you can make an appointment at a register office closer to where you live and complete a declaration. This means that all of the information will be given to your local registrar, who will then forward this on to Milton Keynes Council for the registration to be completed.

For more information, please contact the Milton Keynes Register Office at www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/births-marriages-and-deaths or by calling 01908 372101.

We will arrange an appropriate time to reunite you with your loved one’s belongings if they died at the Hospice. If they were in a care home or nursing home, the staff there will contact you about this. If you would like to keep something to help you remember your loved one, such as a lock of hair or a hand print, your funeral director can arrange this.

Most funerals are arranged through a funeral director (also known as an undertaker). It’s important to find a funeral director who belongs to one of the professional associations, such as the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) or the Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF), since these associations have codes of practice and complaints procedures. We can provide you with a list of local funeral directors if required.
